England's most successful indoor club

Indoor hockey isn't a winter sideline at East Grinstead — it's part of our DNA. Since our first national title in 1986 the club has won twenty national indoor championships, taken on the best clubs in Europe and produced some of the finest indoor players the English game has seen.

Our first national indoor title

— Part of our DNA

Built indoors, every winter

Few clubs anywhere can match East Grinstead's indoor record: fourteen national titles for the men, six for the women, and four decades of European competition against the best clubs on the continent.

We are one of the very few English clubs with our own indoor hall on site, fitted with fixed video analysis, so our squads can train, review and refine in the same space all winter. Alongside it we train at several local venues — because the indoor game rewards repetition, detail and hard work like nothing else.

Twice — in 2016 and 2019 — EG Men and EG Women were crowned national indoor champions on the same day, something very rarely achieved in the history of English hockey.

“Indoor Hockey has been a central part of EGHC’s ‘dna’ over the years and we take the English domestic competition extremely seriously.”

— A legacy forged indoors

Four decades at the top table

From a first title in 1986 to the women's hat-trick of 2024–2026 — the story of East Grinstead indoors.

Men

1986–87

The first title

EG won the national indoor title for the first time in 1986, earning a place at an unofficial European tournament in Amiens in 1987. Led by Olympic champion Richard Leman — partnered in defence by Richard Organ — the team came through a tight semi-final against the Swiss before losing the final to the French hosts.

Men

1990s

Crystal Palace to Cologne

An annual rivalry with St Albans lit up the national finals at Crystal Palace. A second title in 1993 took EG into the official European Cup, where Volker Fried's German champions won 7–4 in Cologne in 1994 and the Poles edged a 7–5 thriller. When the early-90s team retired together, EG regrouped and kept their Premier Division place — by 2014 still the only club ever-present in the top flight since the National Indoor League began.

Men

2006–2019

The dynasty

The 2006 title opened a new era, and from 2009 the men won eight titles in a row. The ninth national crown, on 2 February 2014, set a new English record, and the tally reached fourteen by 2019. Led first by Richard Organ, with indoor coaches Scott Ashdown, Richard Payne and Tim Deakin and a young Ross Stott as assistant, EG welcomed Germany's Martin Häner and Mats Grambusch and Czech goalkeeping great Filip Neusser.

Europe

2014

Europe comes to Crawley

Sixteen months after hosting the EuroHockey Club League at East Grinstead, the club brought the Men's EuroHockey Indoor Club Champions Cup to England for the very first time, at K2 Crawley. It was the 25th edition of the competition and the first played five-a-side — with EG representing England in the top tier of European indoor hockey.

Women

2014–2026

A modern dynasty

Four promotions in four seasons took EG Women to the Premier Division in 2013/14, where they finished fifth — a point off the play-offs. Sophie Bray's semi-final winner sent them to a first national final in 2015, and the breakthrough came in January 2016. Titles followed in 2019 and 2022 under Mary Booth, 2024 and 2025 under Theo Dowse, and again in 2026 — plus a EuroHockey Indoor Club Champions Cup bronze.

Juniors

2013–today

The next generation

The women's success was built on youth success. Our Under-18 girls won the national title for the first time in 2013 and took silver in 2014, then reclaimed the crown at Nottingham University in January 2024. Today's juniors train indoors in our own hall every winter.

Behind the bench

The people who built it

Richard Organ

Men's 1st Team captain in the 1990s and part of the winning indoor teams in 1986 and 1993, Organ became possibly the most important figure in laying down the blueprint for future success, personally having a hand in at least 11 of the titles the men secured.

Mary Booth

Initially leading the U18 girls to their first title win, Mary took the women to their first Final in 2014, secured the title a year later in a historic men / women double, and brought many influential talents into the team over a number of successful years.

Scott Ashdown

Scott joined EG following a lengthy spell at Reading Hockey Club where he won numerous titles. An accomplished exponent of the Indoor game, Scott switched from player to coach and played a key role in the Dynasty years

Wes Jackson

Leads today's men's squad — a club legend and indoor title-winner at home and in Europe

Ross Stott

One of the most talented indoor players to have played the men's game and a budding coach, Ross was central to the men's latter years and has become a key architect behind the women's recent run of form.

Richard Payne

Essentially born at EG, Richard was part of the outdoor title winning sides of 2009 and 2010. He won several national indoor titles before himself leading the side to victory as coach.

Jason Lee

Having played for EG in the late 80s and the 90s, Jason returned to EG to coach the Women to a dramatic last second title win vs Repton

Richard Leman

Olympic champion who led EG to the club's first national indoor title in 1986 and to the European final in Amiens a year later

— Why indoor matters

It makes complete hockey players

Indoor hockey is unforgiving — and that's exactly why we love it. It sharpens technique, decision-making and teamwork in ways that carry straight onto the outdoor pitch.

01

Precision

The ball can only leave the floor for a shot. Lift it a centimetre and it's a free hit against you — so basics have to be close to perfect.

02

Speed of thought

A smaller court, five players a side and constant transitions mean every player is involved in every second of the game.

03

Space and angles

Reading tight spaces, building triangles and making decisions together — lessons in spatial awareness that transfer directly outdoors.

04

First touch and defending

Indoor transforms first touch and one-on-one defence. It's why our juniors train indoors every winter in our own hall.

— In their words

No hiding place

“The game is so fast … you could be two goals down with two minutes to go and yet still win the game.”

Glenn Kirkham — England & GB

“It suits my style of play; I like to be dynamic and move quickly, which is one of the key ingredients for indoor hockey.”

Niall Stott — five national titles with EG

“Regardless of the position you play, everyone is always involved in the action. There is no hiding place on an indoor court.”

Mark Pearn — eight national indoor titles
